Hello Everyone,

Once again, I'm going put fingers to keyboard in a somewhat entertaining manner. Or at least, what I hope to be entertaining.

My previous history of SEQ post was written in one sitting in about an hour from by admittedly faulty memory.

I would like to put together a detailed history of EQ as pertains to the rise of SEQ. There are some murky details that may suprise some of you in regards to the origin of SEQ proper... but I would like to hear the history as some of you know (or think you know) it... especially if you were "there" at the beginning.

More importantly, I think, I would like ancedotes, stories and experiences of the users (and of course developers). They can be funny, interesting, sad; it doesn't matter. I can't guarentee any or all of them will be included in the final product, but don't make up or embelish things. If you can provide links to old posts or logs, so much the better.

I plan on this being a lengthy piece for people who are interested, but mostly to satisfy my own sense of history and for a reference document that can be found easily and readily by anyone who might want it.

I'm not sure if it will be fanciful like my previous history or just the facts... probably a mixture of both. I welcome any comments one way or the other.

Please post whatever you got, or want to talk about, or think would be interesting in relation to this here. I will be referring back this thread often :)

I can help a little.

Here is are the old messages boards that I know of:

http://www.ethernalquest.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true (http://www.ethernalquest.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true)

and the one before that

I was told there was one other message board before the one above, but that was before my time.

Here is the README of v1.0, I believe when it was floating around on the geocities (or some free site space) and also when the very brief message board was hosted there. Was there ever a version released before this?

ShowEQ v1.0 by [email protected]
Released: 01/01/2000

Realtime Everquest packet analyzer and interpreter for Linux.

Featues:
- Realtime map view of player showing coords and heading
- Realtime view of all npc/mobs in zone including stats
- Viewing of invisible players / GMS
- Skill tracking
- Zone tracking
- Mapping
- Color coded mob view
- etc, etc

- Also an auto-item and mob database, including cgi utils for viewing

Requires:
- A linux machine with Everquest packets going past its ethernet
- C++ compiler
- QT Lib 1.something
- Root access for promiscious mode

This is the first and last public release of this code.
Do with it what you wish, as long as you don't email me for help.

A couple of notes:
- Create a log directory one level up from your binary directory.
- You need a c++ compiler and the QT (I used version 1.x) libraries
- Edit packet.cpp and edit the client_addr #define
- Most of the maps are copied off the web, so they are distributed
seperately, but the program is sorta useless without maps.

I know the source includes lots and lots of information for hacker coders
to write exploit code, oh well. There is no documentation, you are on your
own.

Mail me at [email protected] if you really have to...

I have always want (for not reason other than nostalgia) to have a copy of ShowEQ Version 1.0, but I have never been able to find it.

The oldest versions available in the Attic of CVS is late 2000.
I think it was something like 9 months old when the initial version was checked.
