View Full Version : System.Net.Dns threw an exception

In any version of the client since 1.13, including Slarti's and the newer version, I get this error every damn time.

Could not connect to the server: The type initialized for "System.Net.Dns" threw an exception.

I'm running the client and server locally on one PC, since my room is too small to afford 2 PCs. The original 1.13 and 1.9b server worked flawlessly. Yes I have the IP address correct. No I don't have a firewall up, yes I do use a router.

I have .Net 1.1, as well. Gettin frustrated cuz I like all the new features in the new versions. Just sucks I can't use em. :rolleyes:

Try redownloading the .Net software that Slart has link in his posts. Then if you are still having problems post more of the message so we can do some research on it to try and help you getting it up and running.

Downloaded .net again, pretty sure I had the right version, but still the same error message in any case. That's the whole error message, btw. Kinda annoying since I don't even know where to start with fixing it. I've tried redoing the .xml files, tried modifying the IP address a bunch, double-checked I have the right IP, updated the offset file, etc, etc.

Has anyone else running the client and server on the same box run into this problem?

What OS are you running? Any service packs? Any major modifications of the core OS like those programs that try and rip out IE? And evil online software that tries to take over your IP stack like AOL?

Windows XP, no service packs, no mods.

Hmm... you just reminded me... I saw a website somewhere that suggested some Windows Services you could shut down to optimize performance... maybe I shut one down that was needed by this version but not the old versions of MySEQ?

Crap, can't remember the website now.

That's the only possibility I can think of, but why it would effect 1.14 and not 1.13 I don't know.

List of all my Disabled services:

Alerter, Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, ClipBook, Error Reporting Service, Fast User Switching, Human Interface Device Access, Indexing Service, IPSEC Services, Network DDE & DDE DSDM, NT LM Security Support Provider, Performance Logs and Alerts, Portiable Media Serial Number Service, QoS RSVP, Remote Registry, Secondary Logon, Smart Card, SSDP Discovery Service, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, UPS, Upload Manager, WebClient, Windows Time, Wireless Zero Configuration, WMI Performance Adapter.

Half of those mean nada to me. Any of them need to be switched on?

1.14 is wrote in VS .Net 2003 which uses .Net Framework 1.1 whereas 1.13 used 1.0 (something like that). Go and patch your workstation and it will work. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get the latest .Net Framework.

I had .Net 1.1 already. I do some programming in VB.net, so it came with my Visual Studio. Just found SP2, though. Installed it. Will reboot when I'm done raiding to see if it fixed it.

On a side-note, the 1.10 server works perfect with my 1.13 client, so it's a client issue of some kind. Anyway, hour until raiding's done, will hopefully figure this damn thing out soon.

I love all the new features in the new version, but I can't use it /cry

If you are using 1.15.4 please turn on Logging iunder Options by setting it to 1 then try to connect. Then post your log file so we can see whats going on.

I develop on WinXP fully patched so it might me in that area. Yes the client is at fault cause of it being developed in 2003 vs. 2002. Do you have all the DLLs for 1.15.4 that comes in the Support File zip?

Support Files:
MagicLibrary.Dll
SpeechLib.Dll

And from the 1.15.4 zip the following DLL:
FolderBrowser.dll

Has anyone else tested the newer version on local machines that use a router? I've tried opening up port 5555, I've tried using 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 and localhost for my IP. None work.

I'm fairly proficient in programming, though my skills lean more towards VB, I do know C to an extent. Lemme know if there's anything I can tweak in the code to help test this, or if there's some network setting I need to modify.

Check your DNS setteings on your computer. You shouldn't need to open port 5555 on FW unless you have a personal FW installed on that computer. WIf you do then you need to open port 5555 in/out for TCP

Not sure what settings need to be set to what. Never been sure on the DNS settings...

Under the LAN connection's TCP/IP DNS settings, here's what I've got.

No DNS server addresses entered
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes selected
Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix checked off

No DNS suffix in the box
Register this connection's addresses in DNS checked
Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration unchecked.

Oh, and no firewall anywhere, I just added it to the port forwarding on my router.

Then later you posted you did a full windows update. Did that include SP1 for Windows XP?

Despite the fact that you have an older client that still works, I still think this is primarily a problem with your machine specifically. There are plenty of people using client and server on the same machine on Windows XP without any issues. Unfortunately, I can't really suggest any more troubleshooting techniques for you short of blowing away your system and re-installing XP.

Do you have the source for the version of yours that works? If so, it would help immensely to see the differences in how it connects to the server. I don't have any of the source prior to 1.14 anymore I don't think.

When you check your TCP/IP settings on the General tab do you have any DNS server addresses?

You can go to DOS and type ipconfig /all

If you don't have any DNS numbers, then that could be the problem. Basic TCP/IP uses an IP Address, Subnet Mask and DNS Address. Make sure your Subnet Mask is yet. Based on what I seen you write your SM would be 255.255.255.0.

If you can't get it working then I would suggest posting your ipconfig /all output (DO NOT PUT THE REAL IP ADDRESS OR COMPUTER NAME, JUST FOUR YOUR PROTECTION) If you need to change your IP address then change the 2, 3, 4 numbers. But we need to see the first number to determine which SM you need.

Class A 1.x.x.x to 126.x.x.x 255.0.0.0
Class B 128.x.x.x to 191.x.x.x 255.255.0.0
Class C 192.x.x.x to 123.x.x.x 255.255.255.0

What are you typing into the IP Address field?

There are 3 values you should try:

1) Your computer name
2) Localhost address: 127.0.0.1
3) Your real IP address Use IpConfig in a command window to find this.

SOunds like he's using something other than IP address and it's trying to use DNS to resolve the IP Address. Then with problems with having no DNS would result in not being able to resolve the IP Address causing a failure.

Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : November 14, 2003 7:53:31 PM

That looks like a possible issue there. I'm presuming the DNS servers are my actual Internet IP for the house.

192.168.1.1 is my router, 192.168.1.100 is definitely my machine.

Slarti: I've tried using 192.168.1.100, localhost, 127.0.0.1. Haven't tried my actual internet IP, due to my router. Figured it wouldn't work.

MQ: No I don't have any DNS servers set in my TCP/IP. They're set to automatically pick them up.

MQSEQ2

The IP Address for the server is 192.168.1.100 using Port 5555 (1.9b)

So your Client would be configured to use 192.168.1.100 on Port 5555

If you are using the IP Address then the DNS should not be an issue since it doesn't need to resolve the Address.

You may be affected by a bug in the .Net 1.1 Framework when you have more than 50 network protocol binding on your machine:

The following link decribes how to determine if it affects you and has links for downloading a hot fix.
http://www.newsgator.com/forum/shwmessage.aspx?forumid=1&messageid=1062

The following code change will probably fix your problem as well:

in CSocketClient.Connect change:
GetTcpClient = new TcpClient(GetIpAddress, GetPort);

To:
GetTcpClient = new TcpClient();
try
{
// Try converting the address string directly to an IP address
IPAddress ip = IPAddress.Parse(GetIpAddress);
GetTcpClient.Connect(ip,GetPort);
}
catch
{
// If it fails call GetTcpClient.Connect with the address string directly
// internally this function calls DNS.Resolve which should be able to get
// an IPaddress from a hostname.
GetTcpClient.Connect(GetIpAddress,GetPort);
}

*plays an angelic chorus*

That .net hotfix did it. I had 72 bindings :rolleyes:

Thanks for helping work it out with me lol.

Maybe sticky that hotfix somewhere for others having issues to look into.

Just out of curiosity, how many interfaces do you have and what the hell were they bound to to give you 72?

Squiffy
11-20-2003, 04:24 PM
If I understood enough about networking I may be able to answer that. I know enough about it to get by, to configure a LAN and router and IPs and such. Don't know any of the gritty details though.

What creates these interfaces? Software, hardware, windows settings, routers?

Since my last wipe and reinstall of windows I've installed and deinstalled a lot of internet applications. Could be a bunch of the deinstalled ones left settings behind or something?

Kazaa, emule, chat programs, online games, etc, etc.

jag111

Do this, assuming you still have the enum program. Run the following in a command prompt:

enum > protocols.txt

This will run the enum program that told you you had 72 protocols defined and put the output in a text file called protocols.txt. Then post the text file here. I'm curious to look at it.

Interfaces generally means how many ethernet cards you have in your computer. Protocols are the different ways the ethernet card uses to connect to various things.

In the system I'm using now which only has one ethernet card, enum returned 10 protocols. But even my laptop which technically has 3 cards in it (wireless, built-in hard line, docking station hard line) only had 16 protocols.

I'm just really curious what the other 60'ish ones on your system are.

Now that's scary! Have you ever tried deleting your NIC device and recreating it? I didn't look real close but I seen alot of McAfee bindings and a few others that had multpiles. If MySEQ is working then you may not want to try anything but if your curious of trying to get the number of bindings down to the normal 10 or so bindings try removing the NIC and then adding it back.

I also noticed IPX in there. Do you play any IPX games or use software that requires IPX? If not, you could remove that too.

But yeah, what the hell is McAfee doing to your network stack?
