    Your file association for .xml files might not be completely set. I'm not sure which one myseq uses, but it could either be the Open funcion or the Edit function. Open is set via the right click ->...

    CentOS 6.9 or 7.0 work basically out of the box. If you are still learning Linux, it'd be easiest to just start with one of those.

    myseq (and showeq) only loads one layer of the map. Brewalls tends to put the labels on a different layer, so you'd have to merge them into one file.

    Make sure it (the port, and the server exe) are not being blocked by whatever firewall you are using. If you're sure the .exe is not blocked, just try a different port.
