last time i installed a base debian system, it took all of 7 mintues.
add everything you need to compile showeq via net install on a cable modem, and you can do it in 30-45 minutes :)
the showeq packages wont interfere with cvs builds. CVS builds by default install to /usr/local/*, and my packages install into the /usr/* hierarchy, so both can coexist.
