CentOS 6.9 or 7.0 work basically out of the box. If you are still learning Linux, it'd be easiest to just start with one of those.

As a side note, the updated mapconvert script works fine in the Windows Subsystem for Linux bash shell. (Win10 only... in Programs and Features, then install Ubuntu through the MS Store.) ...
myseq (and showeq) only loads one layer of the map. Brewalls tends to put the labels on a different layer, so you'd have to merge them into one file.

Make sure it (the port, and the server exe) are not being blocked by whatever firewall you are using. If you're sure the .exe is not blocked, just try a different port.
