    System.Net.Dns threw an exception

In any version of the client since 1.13, including Slarti's and the newer version, I get this error every damn time.

Could not connect to the server: The type initialized for "System.Net.Dns" threw an exception.

I'm running the client and server locally on one PC, since my room is too small to afford 2 PCs. The original 1.13 and 1.9b server worked flawlessly. Yes I have the IP address correct. No I don't have a firewall up, yes I do use a router.

I have .Net 1.1, as well. Gettin frustrated cuz I like all the new features in the new versions. Just sucks I can't use em.

Try redownloading the .Net software that Slart has link in his posts. Then if you are still having problems post more of the message so we can do some research on it to try and help you getting it up and running.

Downloaded .net again, pretty sure I had the right version, but still the same error message in any case. That's the whole error message, btw. Kinda annoying since I don't even know where to start with fixing it. I've tried redoing the .xml files, tried modifying the IP address a bunch, double-checked I have the right IP, updated the offset file, etc, etc.

Has anyone else running the client and server on the same box run into this problem?

What OS are you running? Any service packs? Any major modifications of the core OS like those programs that try and rip out IE? And evil online software that tries to take over your IP stack like AOL?

Windows XP, no service packs, no mods.

Hmm... you just reminded me... I saw a website somewhere that suggested some Windows Services you could shut down to optimize performance... maybe I shut one down that was needed by this version but not the old versions of MySEQ?

Crap, can't remember the website now.

That's the only possibility I can think of, but why it would effect 1.14 and not 1.13 I don't know.

List of all my Disabled services:

Alerter, Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, ClipBook, Error Reporting Service, Fast User Switching, Human Interface Device Access, Indexing Service, IPSEC Services, Network DDE & DDE DSDM, NT LM Security Support Provider, Performance Logs and Alerts, Portiable Media Serial Number Service, QoS RSVP, Remote Registry, Secondary Logon, Smart Card, SSDP Discovery Service, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, UPS, Upload Manager, WebClient, Windows Time, Wireless Zero Configuration, WMI Performance Adapter.

Half of those mean nada to me. Any of them need to be switched on?

1.14 is wrote in VS .Net 2003 which uses .Net Framework 1.1 whereas 1.13 used 1.0 (something like that). Go and patch your workstation and it will work. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get the latest .Net Framework.

I had .Net 1.1 already. I do some programming in VB.net, so it came with my Visual Studio. Just found SP2, though. Installed it. Will reboot when I'm done raiding to see if it fixed it.

On a side-note, the 1.10 server works perfect with my 1.13 client, so it's a client issue of some kind. Anyway, hour until raiding's done, will hopefully figure this damn thing out soon.

I love all the new features in the new version, but I can't use it /cry

If you are using 1.15.4 please turn on Logging iunder Options by setting it to 1 then try to connect. Then post your log file so we can see whats going on.

I develop on WinXP fully patched so it might me in that area. Yes the client is at fault cause of it being developed in 2003 vs. 2002. Do you have all the DLLs for 1.15.4 that comes in the Support File zip?

    Support Files:
    MagicLibrary.Dll
    SpeechLib.Dll

And from the 1.15.4 zip the following DLL:
    FolderBrowser.dll

Has anyone else tested the newer version on local machines that use a router? I've tried opening up port 5555, I've tried using 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 and localhost for my IP. None work.

I'm fairly proficient in programming, though my skills lean more towards VB, I do know C to an extent. Lemme know if there's anything I can tweak in the code to help test this, or if there's some network setting I need to modify.

Check your DNS setteings on your computer. You shouldn't need to open port 5555 on FW unless you have a personal FW installed on that computer. WIf you do then you need to open port 5555 in/out for TCP

Not sure what settings need to be set to what. Never been sure on the DNS settings...

Under the LAN connection's TCP/IP DNS settings, here's what I've got.

    No DNS server addresses entered
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes selected
Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix checked off

No DNS suffix in the box
Register this connection's addresses in DNS checked
Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration unchecked.

Oh, and no firewall anywhere, I just added it to the port forwarding on my router.

Then later you posted you did a full windows update. Did that include SP1 for Windows XP?

Despite the fact that you have an older client that still works, I still think this is primarily a problem with your machine specifically. There are plenty of people using client and server on the same machine on Windows XP without any issues. Unfortunately, I can't really suggest any more troubleshooting techniques for you short of blowing away your system and re-installing XP.

Do you have the source for the version of yours that works? If so, it would help immensely to see the differences in how it connects to the server. I don't have any of the source prior to 1.14 anymore I don't think.
