Map loading Problem

Seem to have a problem similar to one that was posted by someone else, however their solution will not work for me.

Clean RH 7.2 install
installed 4.2.7 per guide .. no problems

I cannot get a map to auto load, I have to manually open maps.

I've checked the following:

Always Repaint Map Cache
Show>Map Lines
View>Map
Tried to check everything else map related.

Another problem - will not save preferences.
Everthing else works fine, spawns, etc.

I have another box running 4.2.6 and it's perfect.

Any help or direction greatly appreciated.

Did I botch the install ?

Did you do a 'make install'? Do you have your permissions set correctly? The fact that you cant save preferences either leaves me to beleive it is one of these two things..
