ok, i can't find this anywhere using search. can someone advise me on which services and applications that don't need to be loaded at boot? i'm just looking to get it to run a bit faster than it is. the machine is used primarily for seq and surfing the web. sound isn't needed. mandrake 8.2. here's the running services right now:

anacron
apmd
atd
crond
devfsd
gpm
harddrake
internet
keytable
kheader
kudzu
linuxconf
netfs
network
nfslock
numlock
partmon
portmap
random
sound <-- guess i don't need that : P
syslog
usb
xfs
xinetd

any help would be appreciated. and are there any other start up programs i could disable? that list is from mandrake control center->system->services

Most of these services I know what they are...but since I run Redhat a few are named differently or are not on Redhat all togather...

Things you can disable if you want to:

apmd = Advanced Power Managment -(really only needed if you use a laptop)
anacron = I am guessing this is typo for Anaconda if so can be disabled
netfs = network file systems disable (this is not related to samba)
syslog = can be disable but you system will not keep logs any longer
usb = disable unless you have any usb devices on your linux system

The rest I would leave the hell alone unless you know what ya are doing.

anacron = a periodic command scheduler. It's like crontab, but it doesn't assume the system is running all the time.

nfslock can be stopped
portmap can be stoped
kudzu can be stopped
