View Full Version : The common unknown spawn problem

Hi, I realize people get flamed for this type of post so am expecting it again. However I have searched and read through numerous topics on exactly this problem and am still getting nowhere.

I am not a novice when it comes to Unix but this problem I just cant seem to figure out. I realize that it is pointing to a problem with my libEQ.a library but everything checks out with the md5sum and with all the install docs posted.

When I start up ShowEQ everything looks fine except that it doesnt filter out the info on my character (skills, name, race, etc) and every single spawn shows as an Unknown NPC. I did the 'ifconfig eth0 -promisc' so that is set. I have also attached a copy of my configure output if that would show anything useful for you (I didnt see anything odd except for the missing --run comment which I have seen on numerous peoples config). I have also tried redoing everything from scratch.

The only errors I encountered on installation was the fact that spawnlist2.h was missing an include for qtlineedit.h. I added that and the compile went through with no problems.

hmm. Always see problems once I post something (smacks self). Gonna try installing QT-3.0.5 first.

Well, You probably want to reread any install docs you have, there is no md5sum for libEQ.a anymore because libEQ.a is not needed.

I will check them again, but they clearly talk about libEQ.a in the docs. here is a copy paste:

INSTALL.newbies:
1.8 Downloading most recent libEQ.a file
getting latest libEQ.a (see the file README.libEQ in cvs files) put
this file in /usr/lib as well. it is important that this is the ONLY
libEQ.a in the library path, and that it be the most current. It is
okay to have an extra copy in say /seq, but not in /lib or a few
other places.

The static library libEQ.a was once distributed with ShowEQ. This created
some confusion since the supposedly "Open Source" ShowEQ would only build
correctly on x86 Linux.

The configure script now checks for libEQ.a in your compiler's library path.
If present, decryption support will be compiled into ShowEQ. If absent,
ShowEQ will function only in GPS (radar/map) mode with all mobs shown as
"unknown".

The libEQ.a library may be downloaded from the following sites:

*** WARNING ***

It's possible people may try to build trojan horse versions of this library
to capture account/password data. (This would be tricky, but possible)

YOU MUST VERIFY THE MD5 CHECKSUM (from the "md5sum" command) VERSUS A POSTING
MADE ON SOURCEFORGE FROM Ratt, Zaphod or Casey. DO NOT TRUST ANY MD5 CHECKSUM EXCEPT THIS
ONE.

It would be pretty easy to "forge" a message from one of us giving different
md5sums and include it with the rest of ShowEQ don't trust any message
included with this or any version of ShowEQ which claims to list
accepted MD5 checksums. You should also be mistrustful if we suddenly
redirect everyone to a new site with a new libEQ.a file with a
different checksum. It probably means someone hacked one of our accounts.

To check the MD5 checksum, execute the following command from the directory you saved libEQ.a in (usually /usr/lib/):

Either the install docs that are given in the cvs distribution are incorrect or I am supposed to still download the file.

The docs you have are indeed wrong, there is no need to download libEQ.a any longer.

is there a location where I can guarentee to get the correct docs?

I am still getting the same problem even after installing qt-3.0.5. Everything comes up as unknown and it wont even detect my characters info.

Maybe there is a new step or something i missed though in the new docs vs the old docs.

Those are up to date docs. No one has, of yet, updated them to reflect that the library is no longer needed..
