Ok Guys-- I am VERY new at this-- so if I ask a stupid question please do not jump on me too bad.

I have SEQ set up and running-- everything seems fine-- just one problem-- no information!-- I have checked and rechecked my network, the ip address everything I can think off-- I am getting no traffic at all. My Linux computer is working on my network-- I can get to the internet through the router. I can "see" the the other computers on the network. I am at a lose, any help would be welcome. thanks

routers are SWITCHES. You need a HUB

What I do is connect a simple hub to my router and plug both my EQ machine and my SEQ machine into the hub. Then all the other PC's in our house connect to the router. Works well. But as Cryonic says, you need a real hub not a router or a so-called-hub that is actually a switch.

Just a small correction. A router is not a switch. A router is a router and a switch is a switch. Neither routers nor switches replicate (broadcast) ethernet frames at every port like a hub does.

If you are using a packet sniffer, you need the broadcasts, therefore you need hub or an expensive switch capable of setting up vlans.

Actually switches do forward broadcasts. The reason you want a hub is that it forwards all packets (regular and broadcast) If you use a switch, you do need an expensive one - not because you want vlans, but because you want the ability to do port monitoring. Vlans are usually still switched.

The routers we are referring to here are the SOHO type created by Linksys and others... They are a multiport Switch with a firewall/NAT/routing functionality added on...

Depending on the device, you sometimes have the option of mirroring data sent and received on one port to another. I don't know if these at home broadband connection routers support this though. Might be something to look at in the advanced configuration of your particular router.

no SOHO device supports port-spanning/mirroring. You would have to upgrade to a Cisco or 3Com device that is normally sold via vendors to businesses.

Ebay for ds108 or ds105.

Thanks Guys-- I kinda thought that might be the problem but wanted to make sure before I did anything. Router does not allow the linux computer to see the traffic for the EQ program. Thanks for taking it easy on me :-)

OK guys now I am really messed up.

I got a GOOD hub, got it hooked up ( I think). I am able to log on to the lnternet from both the windows computer and the Linux compter throught the hub. So they should be able to "see" the packets going to the hub?? yes?? NO! :-(

Still no traffic on the sniffer. What the hell did I do wrong?? As soon as I launch SEQ the activity on that plug stops completely. Do I have to assign a hard ip address to the windows computer and not use DHCP or what? The windows computer is completely invisible to the linux computer. Any help is welcome. Thanks

Be more specific. What's a "GOOD" hub? If it's a linksys, it's probably still a switch for the most part, though sometimes you can force it into hubness by putting both a 10 and 100 MBit card on it.

I bet the "hub" you bought isn't really a hub at all, but yet another switch/router.

What brand/model number did you purchase?

You are right it is a linksys. I will try less "good" one :-) thanks

I got the Hub you suggested Dedpoet. I can logon to EQ from the windows computer through the hub, I can get on the interent from the Linux computer through the hub, but the linux computer will not see anything that is going on with the windows computer. I have tried running the SEQ using the Ip address, the "next address seen" and the mac address-- nothing. with SEQ running the active light is soild and there is no network activity at all on the linux computer, and no activity on the "show network" menu item in SEQ. I do not understand why, if the linux computer can access the internet through the hub why it cannot monitor the packets on the hub???

Can you ping the Linux computer from the Windows computer, and vice versa? What are both machine's IP addresses and subnet masks?

fratedog
07-20-2004, 12:37 PM
Yes I can ping both-- sub nets are 255.255.255.255-- ip for windows is 192.168.1.104 and linux is 192.168.1.105

You need to have your network set up like this

Internet
|
DSL/Cable/whatever
|
Router
|
---Hub---
| |
SEQ WindowsBoth the SEQ and the windows box running EQLive need to be connected to the hub.

That is the way the network is set up. I think it is working now for some unknowen reason-- I get the long list of errors that, in another thread, means that I have a none working version. I will get that today. I do not know why it started working--nothing had changed but-- thanks guys. If I have problems when I get the newest version I will be back :-)

You may also want to change your subnets to 255.255.255.0, instead of 255.255.255.255. The later is a broadcast address, not an actual working subnet.

Subnet/Subnetmask doesn't matter to a NIC in Promiscuous mode.

These older Linksys Workgroup hubs are the real thing and work great. Just make sure it is the older (white) hub and not the newew (blue) hub.

I'm aware, SBR, I mostly meant for practical purposes. :-)

That's the same one that I use ! :) Works great.

I've owned that hub for over 5 years .. needed to get a new power supply since I lost the old one in a move, but it still works.
