In a few words:
WOW monitors the names of the windows in the tasklist every 15 sec and does hashes over the memory of the other running processes and compares it against a "black list" to hunt "bad" software for cheating. If anything is found the player is banned ...

It sounds like it would be easily subverted, in a similar manner to how MQ2 gets around the memcheck (they only scan the memory used by eqgame.exe) routines in EQ1.

If I recall correctly, didn't SoE try scanning the tasklist a long time ago and ended up pissing-off a number of people?
