Dec 20 18:15:01 ground-0 kernel: device eth0 left promiscuous mode
Dec 20 18:15:01 ground-0 su(pam_unix)[4238]: session closed for user root
Dec 20 18:15:35 ground-0 su(pam_unix)[16570]: session opened for user root by (uid=500)

here is var/log/messages

any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

thanks

None of that has anything to do with showeq. /var/log/messages is your syslog probably filtered in some way. showeq does not log anything to syslog.

I figured, was curious if anyone had any ideas what it means or how to maybe fix it.

device eth0 left promiscuous mode

Your ethernet card left promiscuous mode. This means it will ignore any packets it sees that aren't destined for it. This is probably because showeq quit.

su(pam_unix)[4238]: session closed for user root

The shell that su spawned exited. You either exited the shell manually, the shell was killed somehow, or you have autologout turned on. Are you exiting X or doing something that would cause this? Do you have autologout set? What distribution are you using? What shell are you using?

su(pam_unix)[16570]: session opened for user root by (uid=500)

su spawned a new shell for root. This was probably you redoing su to run showeq again.

I am not touching the box when it happens. I am running mandrake 2005 LE. I am not sure what autologout is.. its not logging out, as in user logout or anything if that is what you mean. Its not going into safe mode or screen saver either. How can I tell what shell I am using?

thanks again

echo $SHELL maybe? autologout is exactly what it sounds like. It automatically logs you out if you're idle for too long. When you say it's not logging out, you're wrong. You posted the syslog message that proves it is logging out!

I don't mean it is logging you out totally, it is just logging out of the shell that su spawned when you did su and typed in your root password.

If you're using bash, TMOUT controls autologout. If you're using tcsh, autologout controls autologout.

How exactly do you run showeq?

How exactly do you run showeq? [admin@ground-0 ~]$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
[admin@ground-0 ~]$

If i open a shell window, and su to root, and run showeq that way or by the shortcut I made on the desktop, the shortcut is set to run as root. It seems to exit when I zone sometimes, about 30 percent of the time.. I zone and showeq just exits.

Don't use the desktop shortcut. Instead, run a shell, then "su -" then type your root password, then run showeq from there. showeq is probably crashing because of missed packets with a packet fragmentation error and you don't have a console to show it. Once you do that and see that's what happening, search for your error and fix your problem.

Yeah, that thing you edited in. Search for that and fix your problem.

okies, what do I search for exactly? not really a linux wiz.. if you don't want to help more I understand as it does not seem to be a showeq issue.

thanks!

Pick any bit of your error that looks important then go look at the FAQ file that came with your showeq. It's got like 4 things in it and one of them is how to fix that exact thing.

Sometimes showing someone how to fish and giving them mulitiple and repetitive hints just doesn't work as well as occasionally smacking them with the fish that you help them catch.

Sorry, couldn't resist, hehe.
